European PIL protects the consumer as a party to cross-border business transactions. This raises the question as to the requirements for a contract to be defined as a consumer contract in the sense of international private and procedural law. Kathrin Sachse examines the structure and limits of the international consumer contract. The general concept of international consumer law constitutes the frame of reference for the interpretation of the term »consumer contract«. The author adopts a model protecting the consumer not per se, but in specific transactional situations. She then discusses different approaches to defining the term »consumer« and examines additional material, personal and spatial elements to limit the basic purpose-related approach. Following a detailed analysis of individual issues, she develops a proposal for a definition of international consumer contracts.
