Summary
Herder's interpretation of Genesis 1 is a remarkable example of 18th century exegesis of the Hebrew Bible. Not only did he aim at a historical understanding of the text, but he also dealt with the contemporary philosophical critique of religion, notably the writings of David Hume.
Christoph Bultmann shows the genuinely theological character of Herder's book Älteste Urkunde des Menschengeschlechts of 1774-76 and argues for a re-evaluation of its author's influential aesthetic approach to the biblical tradition.
