The German welfare state is characterized by a special form of cooperation with the voluntary welfare sector. Luise Poschmann examines the previously little-noticed influence of the protestant Diakonie on the legal, political, and ideological origins of this relationship, which is understood as an expression of the (Catholic) principle of subsidiarity.
