Cross-border civil proceedings can be accelerated through the use of modern information and communication technology. This requires the interoperability of the software solutions used in the EU Member States and the establishment of uniform European standards. Starting from the current state of the use of modern information and communication technology in European regulations on civil procedure, Pia Wolf examines the technical and legal possibilities for simplifying cross-border civil litigation through electronic means of communication. The technical potential for procedural simplification by means of digital, including intelligent, tools is systematically assessed against the legal requirements of the common European procedural principles. A comparative analysis explores the use of modern communication technologies in national civil proceedings and their transferability to European civil litigation. Finally, the author discusses the introduction of a European digital civil procedure. The challenge of cross-border electronic proceedings lies in the diversity of national IT systems. The goal of European solutions must therefore be to achieve interoperability among national systems. The software solution E-CODEX, developed by the European Union, offers the possibility of secure data exchange between national courts and can, in the long term, facilitate cross-border judicial communication.
