The 16th century's protestant church ordinances originated against a backdrop of reformatory upheaval. They established regulatory structures by redefining church offices, liturgy, sermons and services according to new evangelical teaching. Many however also had an effect on life beyond the church and spilled over into community life. The Rhine-Westphalia region presents a heterogeneous landscape of the Reformation's launch, not only having been heavily territorially fragmented, but also confessionally diverse. After numerous land chieftains and town magistrates had inaugurated Lutheran Reformation in the 1530s, several rulers initiated further change by introducing John Calvin's reformed theology.
