Bringing to a close the project begun in 1902 by the Erlangen legal scholar Emil Sehling, the final volume in this series of the Protestant church ordinances of the sixteenth century encompasses the two duchies of Schleswig and Holstein, and includes the district of Dithmarschen. The early arrival of the Reformation in Schleswig-Holstein was strongly influenced by Lutheranism, though the duchies did not join the Lutheran Formula of Concord. Close connections were instead forged with the Reformation in Denmark and in the neighbouring cities of Hamburg and Lübeck.
