Luther's theology of communion contains a comprehensive understanding of reality which presents reality as a whole as a good gift to mankind. This good gift is given to man in a bodily form. In communion, reality can be experienced as a bodily gift in an excellent way. In the main part of this habilitation treatise, Martin Wendte provides a detailed analysis of Luther's theology of communion, particularly in reference to the metaphysics with which it is imbued. In a second part, Wendte supports this metaphysics by referring to Hegel, Schelling and Koch. In a third part, Wendte deals with Luther's relevance by presenting an analysis of late modernity, based on Heidegger, as an age of technology. Luther's understanding of reality constitutes the antithesis to the understanding of reality in the age of technology.
