Birke Siggelkow-Berner provides the first comprehensive study devoted to the literary function of the Jewish festivals within the Bellum Judaicum of Flavius Josephus. She is able to show that the various descriptions of and references to Jewish festivals not only have a specific function within their respective contexts, but also pertain directly to the overall intention of Josephus' account of the Jewish War inasmuch as they are employed to qualify the actions of the Jewish and Roman protagonists.
