  Summary
Based on the problematic relationship between Yahweh as the God of Israel and Israel as the people of Yahweh, Rolf Smend examines central texts and themes from various areas in order to present new theological discoveries which transcend internal Old Textament exegesis. He attaches particular importance to the inclusion of the connections between modern research, theology and the history of ideas. This work makes an important contribution to the discussion about the unity and the 'center' of the Old Testament and contains several theories which have already set the pattern for further research, such as for example the theory of a 'nomistic' redaction in the historical work of Deuteronomy.
