  Summary
Using the narratives contained in Acts, Friedrich Avemarie examines the development of Christian baptismal customs from John's baptism in the Jordan River to the church ritual which became customary during the apostolic age. In the Christian practice, the immersion in water develops a reference to the name of Jesus Christ, to the mediation of salvation and forgiveness of sins through Jesus Christ, and to the reception of the Holy Spirit. At the same time, the person being baptized by the church is admitted into the Christian community.
