Christina Metzdorf compares the interpretation of Jesus' action in the temple as seen by the church fathers with the historical-critical authors of the 19th and 20th centuries. In doing so, she describes and analyzes each hermeneutical setting and the specific method applied. Her study shows that the church fathers did in fact discuss all those historical questions which are still under discussion today, and that the conclusions they reached were very similar, albeit in a different hermeneutic context. She makes it clear that there is a confusing variety and inconsistency in the hypotheses of modern literary criticism and historical reconstructions. This book is an aid to understanding the exegesis of the church fathers and a challenge to the hermeneutics - and not the methods - of historical-critical exegesis.
