At the beginning of the 1940s, the question of the good became the main theme in Dietrich Bonhoeffer's theology, and this was when he wrote his main theological work, Ethics. In her monograph, the author gives a systematic analysis of this work, focusing on its philosophical background, since Bonhoeffer's ethical theology as outlined in Ethics is based on a largely unstated, differentiated reception and delimitation procedure by very different thinkers and systems. She also analyzes Bonhoeffer's discussion with modern philosophy, with Kant und idealism, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Heidegger and Neothomism, the philosophy of life and dialogical personalism and its significance for the conception of Ethics and describes its relationship to Luther's and Barth's thinking, which had a great influence on Bonhoeffer.
