Under what conditions is property ethically legitimate? Bertolt Bundschuh reconstructs Protestant conceptions of property around the year 1900 and develops a theological-ethical interpretation of property that relates freedom, responsibility, and the common good to one another.

Under what conditions is property ethically legitimate? Bertolt Bundschuh examines Protestant conceptions of property between 1890 and 1914 in the German-speaking world and analyzes their theological-ethical interpretations against the backdrop of profound social, political, and economic transformations in the German Empire. The point of departure is the observation that around the year 1900, property becomes a central object of public processes of negotiation, without consensus regarding its normative justification, its social functions, or its legitimate limits. The author asks how Protestant theology justifies, critiques, and normatively classifies property and how it contributes to contemporary debates on social justice, freedom, and the common good.
