Einhundert Jahre Institut für Rechtsvergleichung an der Universität München

This volume draws its contributions from a conference held to mark the hundredth anniversary of Ernst Rabel's founding of Munich University's »Institute for Comparative Law« in 1916. Now part of the Institute for International Law, Rabel's establishment was the first of its kind in Germany. The centenary gave rise to a retrospect on the pioneering jurist's life and works, and is complemented by up-to-date stock-taking of developments in the fields of substantive sales law and international contract law. Ernst Rabel's work in the field of sales law led to the Hague Conventions of 1964 on Uniform Sales Law, which preceded 1980's Vienna Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. Furthermore, the Rome I Regulation of June 2008 on the law applicable to contractual obligations is based on principles elaborated by the scholar. The contributions here address these topics, spanning the earliest days of Rabel's institute, the beginnings of comparative law and its most recent developments.
