Summary
Nicole Diersen studies how emotions were used in the politics of the Roman Republic and the functions they had in different areas. In doing so, she departs from the hitherto predominant categorization according to certain words of emotion: Emotions are understood as actions which adopt a strategic approach. The author identifies the emotional strategies – appreciation of others, discrediting of others, discrediting of oneself, and appreciation of oneself – and applies these to Cicero's works in the period between 59 and 49 BC.
