This volume gathers individual studies by Eilert Herms on classics of philosophy, theology, and literature that were previously scattered and hard to find. The positions of Melanchthon, Hume, Jacobi, Herder, Fontane, W. James, A. Dorner, Hirsch, Barth, Heidegger, Th. Mann, Hesse, and H. Krämer are set out in these essays. All of them prove that metaphysics understood as action-orientating knowledge of the universal conditions of human co-existence, which make its ongoing historical change inevitable, sustain it, and thus survive, has become neither impossible nor virtually meaningless because experience has been recognised as the sole source of such knowledge. Even theology betrays its mission when it no longer comprehends Christian faith as the exemplary form of such knowledge and the church as the public place of its communication. The collection helps to show the processing of tradition that the author's »Systematic Theology« lives from.
