Summary
Using the concept of redemption as an example, Claus-Dieter Osthövener examines the reception and the transformation of themes which were originally of a religious nature in non-theological contexts. The Protestant concept of redemption was first described by Martin Luther and was given a modern reformulation by Friedrich Schleiermacher. The author also compares three thinkers from the 19th century: Arthur Schopenhauer, Richard Wagner and Friedrich Nietzsche, and reflects upon the ways in which they transformed the concept of redemption.
