Summary
According to modern scholarship the civilisations in Egypt and Mesopotamia prospering along the river Nile and Euphrates and Tigris respectively developed the earliest systematic engagement with script, language, and written lore. The present volume for the first time offers a comparative overview of the role of these first philologies, the institutions, the actors as well as the methods in both cultural spheres between c. 3000 BC until the turn of the eras.
