Summary
Using semiotics to combine historical and rhetorical criticism, Jonathan Huddleston argues that Genesis' account of origins grounds Persian-era Judea's expected eschatological future. Genesis coheres with the postexilic prophetic restoration eschatology: Israel is a precious seed awaiting creation's promised fruitfulness.
