European solidarity is a concept that is often referred to in the context of the sovereign debt crisis in the European Union. Solidarity has been the key to European integration and is now regarded as a constitutional principle of the European Union. The scope and consequences of this concept however remain unclear – how can it be combined with national identities and how could a European identity evolve?
