Studium der Rechtswissenschaften in München und Freiburg; 1974 Promotion und 1978 Habilitation in Freiburg; 1980 Professor an der Universität Marburg; 1992 Professor an der Universität Jena; 1995 Professor an der Universität Freiburg; 2001 Direktor des Instituts für Ausländisches und Internationales Privatrecht Abt. I an der Universität Freiburg; seit 2011 im Ruhestand.
