Gregory the Great (590–604) was at the same time a judicious politician and a highly gifted thinker. Barbara Müller presents an analysis of leadership based on Gregory's literary works and his papal correspondence. Leadership was one of Gregory the Great's fundamental concerns. Although his ideal of a church leader was the monk-bishop of eastern style, his practical papal interventions show him of a surprising openness for a diversity of potential leaders and leadership activities. Due to the broad approach with a wide range of analyzed sources and the strict chronological order in which the material is presented, the study offers not only rich insights into Gregory's development as a church leader but also into his at times contradictory activities and ideas on leadership.
