How should the disintegration of traditional statehood functions be dealt with? The lectures given during an interdisciplinary conference held at Kiel's Wissenschaftszentrum in January 2017 that are contained in this volume provide a multi-angled examination of topical issues currently threatening the state along with an array of solutions on how to face them. The experts came up with a catalogue of criteria for evaluating potential losses of statehood function as well as recommendations on how to preserve the democratic, republican and social constitutional state.
