In this volume, those works by Hugo Preuß which were written between the beginning of the November Revolution in 1918 up to his death in October 1925 are presented along with commentaries. In these writings, he addressed the general public. They are supplemented by several interventions in the Prussian parliament, of which he was a member for the German Democratic Party, and newspaper reports on public speeches he gave. Many of the essential features of his articles anticipated modern insights of political science and democratic theory. Preuß, an architect of social liberalism, saw the future national anthem, »Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit,« (Unity and Law and Freedom) as a bridge between the 1848 Revolution and the modern social state governed by the rule of law. Thus » national unity, political freedom and social law are the central ideas in the Weimar Constitution.«
