Summary
Ruben Zimmermann presents the first comprehensive study of the traditional and historical connections in gender-specific metaphors in Old Testament, early Jewish, early Christian and Gnostic traditions. In a precise analysis of the texts, he shows how the human language of love was able to develop into an area which contributed images to a complex of theological metaphors and how conversely religious semantics of love react upon interpersonal love relationships.
