The disputatious Enlightenment theologians Carl Friedrich Bahrdt and Johann Salomo Semler used creeds to confront one another in their debate about the limits of religious and teaching freedoms, the binding nature of theological doctrines, and the relationship between public and private religion. The present volume documents this striking clash, which was decisive for neology and one that was not limited to the inner-theological circle, but received broad cultural attention.
