The churches and their position in society are constantly changing. Recalling the concerns of the Protestant reformers, this book establishes the basic principles of ecclesiastical law in order to reveal the theological elements necessary precisely for our time. This enables us to distinguish between competing Lutheran and Calvinist models of ecclesiastic constitutions. The main areas of application establish the extent to which the churches today still provide indispensable services to society, not only socially but also in some cases in giving guidance for discussions in society on questions of ethics. It becomes clear what the advantages of the German solution are in comparison to the rigid separation of church and state in France.
