Wolfgang Schluchter explains the multiple constitution of sociology at the time of its conception. He examines three competing research programs, which he calls sociological Hegelianism (Karl Marx), sociological Kantianism (Émile Durkheim) and Kantian sociology (Max Weber). The author also deals with the system-theoretical and the linguistic turn in recent sociology, addressing the positions of Talcott Parsons and Niklas Luhmann as well as those of George Herbert Mead and Jürgen Habermas. The relevance of these developments for a Weberian research program is scrutinized.
