Normally in copyright law, a work's creator holds exclusive rights and anyone wishing to use the work has had to seek prior consent. However, a role reversal of this principle now often requires copyright holders to actively object by way of opt-outs. Darius Rostam's timely study analyses existing opt-out rules in German and European Union copyright law to develop a context-neutral standard for evaluating their lawfulness and usefulness.
