In the course of the Enlightenment, the theology of the New Testament developed into a historically orientated literary genre. During the 18th century, historical studies were held in high esteem. This, along with the advancement of an anthropocentric world view, has shaped the very axioms of a New Testament theology and still continues to do so. However, the triumph of the historical paradigm has not kept pace with the efforts to attain an adequate theological basis. Paul-Gerhard Klumbies pleads for a reengagement with God as the horizon of New Testament theology. With the focus on its theological core, the »Theology of the New Testament« takes on its share of the overall responsibility of theology as a doctrine of God.
