A pluralistic society needs to have encounters and communication among religions. The theological dialog requires an exegetical basis and has to show the various interpretations of the way in which Abraham is portrayed. In this volume, Hanna Nouri Josua deals with the Islamic view of Abraham. Taking a hermeneutical approach which uses recent methods of Koran exegesis, combines them and applies them systematically to the patriarchal figure, the author demonstrates the development of the image of Abraham in the Koran which reflects the inner growth of Mohammed. By placing this in its probable historical context, this approach incorporates Mohammed's target groups. Prevalent concepts are challenged by those Arabic sources to which access is given here for the first time, including the major commentaries on the Koran, providing incentives for the possible creation of an Abrahamic ecumenism.
