For almost 150 years, states have gradually been harmonizing their law on a regional and on a global level. International approximation and unification of law facilitate cross-border trade and remove legal obstacles in the field of International Family Law. Experience however has proven that international uniform law is not always interpreted in a uniform way. Karin Linhart studies existing mechanisms that are to ensure uniform interpretation. In addition, she examines the pitfalls for diverse interpretation. These pitfalls can be found on an international level during the creation of international uniform law, as well as during the procedure of implementation by national parliaments where implementation is required, and lastly in the course of applying the uniform rules to a given dispute by a national court or other national authority.
