The contributions collected here address the question of which methodological means should be used to interpret – occasionally contradictory and unclearly formulated – legal norms; that is, how they are to be understood and applied, and whether the traditional canon of methods, largely unchanged since the nineteenth century, should be up-dated. This is not just of considerable interest to jurisprudence, but also significant for society as a whole because at the end of the day, the question of how norms are interpreted plays a role in how everyone's individual rights and duties are decided.
