This interdisciplinary volume documents the cultural-academic contributions of a lecture series featuring internationally renowned authors. They provide an unconventional illumination of the unstable relationships between Christianity, but also of Islam, to Judaism in Europe, and analyse the consequences.
From ancient times to the present, Jews have been subjected to hostility right up to aggressive persecution and extermination. Thoughts and actions shaped by prejudice were also accepted, sometimes even promoted, by Christianity and in all strata of Western Christian-influenced societies. This interdisciplinary volume documents the cultural-academic contributions of a lecture series featuring internationally renowned authors. They provide an unconventional illumination of the unstable relationships between Christianity, but also of Islam, to Judaism in Europe, and analyse the consequences. The result is a multifaceted but also stringent synthesis of the current state of academic knowledge presented in a generally understandable form.
