As a result of the reform of the law of obligations, German sales law has been strongly aligned to the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. In her work, Barbara Grunewald deals with the entire sales law in force in the Federal Republic of Germany, showing the common ground and the differences. Both Barbara Grunewald's book »Kaufrecht«, which has just been published, and Gerhard Walter's »Kaufrecht«, published in 1987, which it replaces, have been given the volume number 6 in the series »Handbuch des Schuldrechts.« Barbara Grunewald's book has nonetheless not been called a »new edition«, since she provides a completely new treatment of sales law.

At the same time, German sales law is being broken up into special provisions for some cross-border contracts (CISG), for purchases in which merchants participate (commercial transactions), for purchases of consumer goods and - as a general basis for these rules - all other purchases. The rules for the other purchases are closely linked to the norms of the general section of the civil law of obligations, as are the provisions for the purchase of consumer goods and for commercial transactions.
