Why does the constitution offer religious communities the status of public law corporations? For many, the only explanation for this is of an historical nature. Stefan Magen provides a new answer to the question by incorporating the insights obtained in religious studies into his work. The special rights and opportunities inherent in this status enable the religious community to structure its organization in accordance with its religious identity. The continuing significance of corporate status is shown in its function of putting the religious freedom of the community and its members, granted under the German constitution, into concrete terms and implementing this as well.
