Johann Joachim Spalding was the most powerful and most effective Lutheran pulpit preacher at the culmination, also known as the »neology,« of religious Enlightenment. His »New Sermons« (11768 – 31777) were meant to enlighten and edify his listeners and to break the confining elements in pietism. They were presented in an emotional and mental adaptation of the biblical-reformational tradition for his own contemporaries. This volume provides a vivid insight into the piety of church enlightenment, a piety which was as faithful to the Bible as it was contemporary in its outlook.
