Johann Joachim Spalding was the most powerful and effective Lutheran pulpit preacher at the culmination, also known as the »neology,« of religious Enlightenment. In the second volume of his »New Sermons« (1784), published when he was 70, J.J. Spalding, an eminent theologian of the Enlightenment, provided an impressive summary of his lifelong religious instruction which was aimed at »teaching and encouragement« and whose providential combination of piety and modernity has not lost its appeal or its ability to move us today.
