This volume of the critical edition presents a facet of the pulpit preacher Johann Joachim Spalding (1714–1804) which had previously seldom been the focus of scholarly examination. It contains funeral sermons, devotional works and further sermons held on special occasions, including Spalding's farewell sermon in Barth as well as his inaugural sermon in Berlin.
This enables the reader to obtain insight into the multifaceted sermons of the Berlin head of the neologists. The sermons cover more than a decade of Spalding's work as a pastor (1764–1775), and each individual sermon from the pulpit highlights the theological, historical and intellectual issues which affected Spalding and his listeners. The detailed indexes of persons, biblical passages, and subjects enable the reader to find the main keywords and phrases quickly and demonstrate Spalding's linguistic abilities.
