Summary
Johann Joachim Spalding (1714-1804) was one of the main representatives of the German theology of the Enlightenment. His work The Usefulness of the Ministry in Preaching and its Improvement was first published in 1772 when he was provost and head of the consistory in Berlin. In principle it is the classic example of a homiletics of the Age of Enlightenment as well as an apologia of the ministry in preaching, resulting from the problem surrounding the desolate social standing of the clergy. In dealing with the philosophy of his time, in particular with David Hume, and in a critical dissociation from the Catholic concept of the ministry, Spalding developed a modern Protestant understanding of the ministry of the church.
