Lehrbuch Digitale Theologie

Digital Theology has been a subject of theological research since the late 2010s. The term is associated with the aim of providing a theological reflection on religious practices, theological concepts and processes of digital cultural transformation. First introduced by Johanna Haberer, the concept was noticed in the German-speaking context only following the international debates. With the founding of the Global Network of Digital Theology in 2019, a comprehensive and programmatic definition emerged. Under this heading, reflections on digital methods in the humanities are brought together with ethical debates and cultural-theoretical perspectives. In the German-speaking context, the field currently focuses primarily on specific issues such as reflections on artificial intelligence, digital publics, media anthropology, and areas of Practical Theology and Systematic Theology. Within these domains, digital theology has increasingly become part of academic teaching. To date, however, this broader research context has not been supported by a textbook that offers a consolidated introduction to the genesis and themes of digital theology. The study book on »Digital Theology« fills this gap and serves as a travel guide that situates selective German debates within the international discussion, relates the various fields of digital theology to one another, and places them in dialogue with other research debates. In doing so, it acknowledges the fact that Digital Theology is no longer discussed only in isolated instances, but has developed into an independent transdisciplinary field of research.
