This volume contains the writings of Max Weber on antiquity subsequent to his Roman Agrarian History during the years from 1893 to 1908. Especially important are his essay on »The Social Causes of the Decline of Ancient Culture« and the famous third version of his »Agrarverhältnissse im Altertum« (1908), his most important work on antiquity, which is in fact a social and economic study of the whole of antiquity, including Mesopotamia and Egypt as well as ancient Israel. The edition presents a critical text and discussion of the genesis of the single treatises, and a running commentary showing the scholarly foundations of Webers texts; it also comprises an extended glossary and detailed indexes.
