It is evident that there are not only trends in clothing, hairstyle or living, but also fashions in the sciences, art, philosophy, and maybe even religion - especially in areas that actually defend 'firm principles' against changes in the zeitgeist and trends. But what does fashion mean in these contexts? And how can such intellectual fashions be explained? Do fashion and modernity belong together? This volume tries to systematically answer these questions by first examining the phenomena of fashion in its obvious habitats of clothing, home furnishing, body type, leisure activities, tourism, and sport, before moving on to questions of specific intellectual fashions in the natural sciences and humanities, art, philosophy, and religion.
