Spinoza's last work was the Tractatus politicus, which was still unfinished when it was published in 1677/78 after his death. For a long time, his theory of politics, the state and his legal philosophy were less noted in Germany than his metaphysics and philosophy of religion. The present commentary aims at filling this gap and discusses Spinoza's epistemology, theoretical foundations of politics, his theories of law and the state, of sovereignty and international relations and interprets them with regard to the background his opus in general. A final contribution sheds some light on the actuality of Spinoza's political thought.
