According to the general opinion of the history of science, Newton's Principia, published in 1687, marked the end of Aristotelian physics and the beginning of modern science. Sven Müller shows that neither Aristotle nor Newton identified the cause of gravity with a force which is located in matter. Newton made use of the Stoic school and identified it with a God conceived as a fine material substance, Aristotle on the other hand with an immaterial substance. The author comes to the conclusion that the Aristotelian theses were never checked or refuted by modern physics, since they were mistakenly equated with late medieval positions. He thus opens up a new field of research common to the humanities and the natural sciences.
