It is not beyond pluralism, but in it – completely exposed to its tension and its conflicts – that politics and the law have to look for a system of peaceful coexistence. Eilert Herms studies those conditions which would make it possible to find a solution for this task.
For a long time, state actions have supported the pluralization of those ethical ways of living which are based on religion or ideologies. At the same time, they have also attempted to counterbalance this development in view of the framework of their own orientation, which saw itself as guided by reason and the law, meaning that it is neutral towards religion and ideologies. However, insight into the inevitable positionality of the human use of reason shows that the goal of bringing ideological-ethical pluralism under control against the backdrop of a higher uniform state ethos is unrealistic and dangerous. It is not beyond pluralism, but in it – completely exposed to its tension and its conflicts – that politics and the law have to look for a system of peaceful coexistence. Eilert Herms studies those conditions which would make it possible to find a solution for this task.
