The rise of an historical-critical approach to the Bible was a great challenge for the Protestant principle of sola scriptura. In this work, Jörg Lauster shows how Protestant theology, starting with Schleiermacher, reacted to this and which transformations the Protestant scriptural principle has undergone through the application of historical exegesis up to the present time. Using methodological awareness as an example, the author focuses on the relationship between Protestant theology and the modern world. Based on this, the author develops a perspective which attempts to hold on to the extremely important legacy of historical criticism in the Protestant doctrine of scripture.
