Summary
A look at the past shows that surrogacy is not a new way for the childless to have a child. Ethical problems and the need to protect the surrogate mother and the child mean that it is prohibited in many countries, including Germany. But with more and more would-be parents prepared to enter into surrogacy arrangements abroad and as a Federal Court of Justice ruling in 2014 revealed, there is a real need for the legislator to rethink the ban. The contributions gathered in this volume were presented at the Heidelberg Surrogacy Symposium in April 2017. They discuss the issue from diverse interdisciplinary perspectives and suggest ways to regulate surrogacy in Germany.
