Observing and being part of worlds that were far from one's own everyday life as well as informing others of these was an early cultural practice of the educated middle class to which Max Weber also adhered and mastered. This volume contains over seventy selected letters and cards from Western European countries and North America which describe the national, social and religious characteristics of each country, providing the reader with cultural and historical snapshots of a travelling scholar. This edition of the »Reisebriefe« (Letters of a Traveller) contains an introductory essay by Hinnerk Bruhns (Paris) as well as a biographical index of persons. The printing procedure used for this edition is simpler than that used for the »Max Weber-Gesamtausgabe« upon which it is based. A second volume, »Gelehrtenbriefe« (Letters of a Scholar), will follow.
