  Summary
The special structure of the German provinces makes it necessary to examine their 'provincial religion' as a number of regional organizations and not as a unified structure. In order to obtain a complete picture of a 'provincial religion', it is necessary to take a look at the essence and above all at the upholders of the regional religions from a chronological and regional perspective which does justice to the heterogeneous cultural, social and economic structure of the area under examination. This volume, the result of a collaboration between religious studies experts, linguists, archeologists and ancient history experts, shows various ways of researching the religious conditions in one of the border provinces of the Roman Empire. This can and is meant to be used as a basis for continued work in this field.
